Resumes/Portfolios

Although you may not be looking for a different teaching job now, you may eventually find that you need or want to move on. For example, your school may lose positions or you may want to apply for another position within your own school. In either case, you will need a resume. It is much easier to keep an up-to-date resume rather than try to find time to create one when you are facing an application deadline. Every professional should keep a copy of his or her resume on a computer and update it regularly. Putting together a portfolio also gives you a professional edge when trying to get a new job or transfer.

• Save a copy of your resume and portfolio on disk or CD.

• Every time you publish an article, present at a conference, take a class, or complete a degree, make sure you add the accomplishment to your resume before it has time to slip your mind.

• If you have a lesson that goes really well, do not forget to add a description, lesson plan, or picture of it to your portfolio.

• Add photos to your portfolio of activities you did with your class. Make sure you delete dated material as you add new items. Remember when using photos, you must have parental permission for any students that show clearly.
